1999 ASTEN Fellowship Report

The Science Centre & Manawatu Museum

I have been an exhibition designer at The Science Centre, Manawatu Museum and Manawatu Art Gallery since The Science Centre first opened in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1994. I was lucky to be given an ASTEN Fellowship to enable me to work alongside other exhibition designers at Questacon and Scitech.

I found Questacon an exciting building to walk into. It has an exciting feel and you know that you are in for something special. I thought the exhibitions were bright, colourful and engaging, with lots of interest and lots to learn.

What I found surprising was the divisions between the people working on exhibit design, education and production. These three functions happened in quite separate parts of the building. At the Science Centre and Manawatu Museum we all work very closely together. There is lots of crossover in ideas and tasks between the three functions, with ongoing discussion and cross checking. We meet formally at regular intervals but also get together informally whenever we
need to.

It was a real pleasure being made a part of Greg Murray's family. I even cooked him a Greek meal which is a very rare occurrence.

At Scitech I enjoyed working with the workshop team on Mission Earthling. I was glad to be able to offer suggestions on the design process and to be trusted to work with their team.

My visit to Scitech made me realise the design potential of computers. As a result of my visit there, my own practice has changed and I now use computers across the board from the design stage to the production stage.
